Use the Laws of Averages

Me: What was one piece of advice that you never forgot?

My Mentor: We are the average of the 5 people you most associate with.

Me: How to you mean?

My Mentor: It means that the people who we associate the most are the average of what we can aspire to. We might interact with many people, but those closest to us have the greatest impact on our mindset, attitude, and decisions.

It’s about surrounding yourself with the type of success you want to have. It is not about being talented, or smart, it is about the people you surround yourself with and their standard of excellence.

At the time my mentor told me this, I gave it some thought and looked around at my friends. I had smart friends. But they were all at my stage. I figured if I was going to advance in the way I wanted, I needed to talk to people who were more advanced than me.

My key finding: The people who are further advanced than me think about things differently. They read different books. They diagnosed problems differently and because of that they were able to get to the root of the issue quicker.

After I had a few conversations with people who were further along on the corporate ladder, I began to diagnose problems like them.

The theory is by Jim Rohn. It borrows from the law of averages, which is, “the result of any given situation will be the average of all outcomes (that we can think of).” If that is the case, I will continually average up.

‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.’ Jim Rohn

Who are the 5 people around you? What type of success would you like to have, do those people currently enjoy that success? What can you do to spend more time with people who are where you want to be and doing what you would like to do?

Write me an email and tell me who you would like to spend time with and why.
