Make success happen. But how you ask? Sometimes we all put barriers in our own way. They are the obstacles we create in our head that block us from success.
My Mentor: People progress quicker in their career when they extend their network to people higher on the corporate ladder than themselves.
Me: That’s great for them. Why would a CEO talk to me?
My Mentor: Don’t you think you should let the CEO decide for him/her self?
Me: I guess so. (a little displeased)
The truth is I felt I had nothing to offer to someone higher up, like a CEO. Until one day, I was introduced to a CEO and we shared a passion for something! We talked for almost an hour and it was amazing. By the end of conversation, he was excited by the information I had shared with him.
CEOs or VPs are humans. They have interests and passions. Ask one for a conversation and let them decide. You might be surprised.
I still have conversations with that CEO today, and we still share that passion – mentoring.
“There’s never going to be a precisely the right moment to speak, share an idea, or take a chance. Just take the moment – don’t let thoughts like, “I don’t feel like I’m ready” get in the way. Look to see if you have the main things or the opportunity will pass you by. Don’t let perfect get in the way of really, really good.” Kathleen Tierney, Executive Vice President and COO of Chubb Insurance.
