Where Do You Want to Be in 5 Years?

“Always lay the groundwork of where and who you want to be in 5 Years, even if you want something else in 5 years, you will have options when you get there.”

My Mentor: Where do you want to be in 5 years?

Me: I don’t know.

My Mentor: Well, you need to pick a place, if not in 5 years you won’t have options.

Me: I’m not sure I know what you mean.

My Mentor: You need to prepare where you are going to be in 5 years even if you don’t know.

Highly successful people plan out where they are going to be 5 years out. For example, if you wanted to be working offshore, you would surround yourself with people who work offshore. If you wanted to be a VP, you would surround yourself with people who are VPs.

Me: But I don’t know where I’ll be or what I want to do. How can I plan?

My Mentor: Deciding what you want is less important than choosing a path.

Me: That doesn’t make any sense.

My Mentor: Let’s say you choose a path – you want to be working in Oil and Gas and at a manager level. Then you start meeting people who are managersand people who are in Oil and Gas. In a few years, you will have a good network with people in a higher level, thinking at a different level than you are now. Some of them will be in Oil and Gas. If you wanted to be in a different industry, you have that option because you have a strong network of managers.

If you didn’t decide on a path, you won’t have the options open to you.

I didn’t plan out to be where I am, I am here because I choose and followed specific plans that gave me options. Because of that, I had doors that opened for me.
